Des Moines Public Schools consists of approximately 70 buildings with an average age of 67 years. Even though the district considers its older school buildings historic assets, they also have many more needs as they age. Providing a safe and healthy environment is a top district priority.
So is ADA compliance, and that is reflected in its emphasis as part of the Students First capital improvements campaign funded by sales tax revenues.
In addition to that funding stream, the district also reserves some PPEL (Physical Plant and Equipment Levy) dollars for ADA issues.
DMPS will continue to emphasize equity of opportunities for our students. The district’s objective is to make all programs accessible to any student regardless of identified special needs.
