CLAT Events for 2019

Want to make your voice heard in support of public education and our schools in Des Moines? Attend any or all of the following events being sponsored by the Community Legislative Action Team:

CLAT 2019 KICK-OFF MEETING

All are welcome to attend a meeting on Monday, January 7, 2019 from 4:30 – 5:30 PM at the DMPS Administrative Offices, 2323 Grand Ave. The meeting will be a chance to discuss priorities and advocacy plans for the 2019 legislative session with lobbyists working on behalf of public schools.

MONTHLY LEGISLATIVE COFFEE

Get updates from Des Moines-area legislators on education-related issues at our monthly coffees, held on the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. starting in January.

  • Saturday, January 7* – Hubbell Elementary School, 800 42nd St., Des Moines District 1
  • Saturday, February 9 – North High School, 501 Holcomb Ave., Des Moines District 2
  • Saturday, March 9 – East High School, 815 East 13th St., Des Moines District 3
  • Saturday, April 13 – Lincoln High School, 2600 SW 9th St., Des Moines District 4

*On January 7, the meeting will be extended until 10:30 a.m., with the extra half-hour dedicated to updating participants about legislative priorities and opportunities to get involved in public school advocacy.

ADVOCACY TRAINING

Learn your way around the State Capitol and how to engage lawmakers about issues that matter. The DMPS Community Legislative Action Team (CLAT) will meet at the State Capitol in the cafeteria area on the lower level on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 10:30 a.m. Plan to tour the Capitol and learn more about how to engage with our Senators and Representatives in preparation for the CLAT Advocacy event “Day on the Hill” and any other time you want to engage lawmakers.

DAY ON THE HILL

Members of CLAT will visit the State Capitol to talk with legislators. Wednesday, February 27, join us at East High School for a briefing at 8 a.m., followed by citizen lobbying at the Capitol from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., meeting near the cafeteria on the lower level.
