Greenwood fourth grader Lily Schoen was one of four grand prize winners in the Des Moines Fire Department’s fire safety poster contest.

Early Tuesday morning a fire truck turned off Grand Avenue and onto 37th Street, its lights ablaze as it pulled up in front of Greenwood Elementary School.

But Pumper 21 wasn’t there for an emergency. Instead, members of the Des Moines Fire Department were providing a special ride to school for one of the winners of this year’s fire prevention poster contest.

This year’s contest recognized sixteen elementary school students for their creative efforts. The grand prize and first place winners will have their artwork shared on billboards around the city in the the coming weeks. And the grand prize winners got the added bonus of a ride to school in a big, red DMFD fire truck.

On Tuesday morning, Greenwood fourth grader Lily Schoen got a lift to school. Fire trucks are also giving a ride to school for award winners at Howe and Morris elementary schools this week.

DMPS appreciates the support of DMFD through the year, from fire safety education for students to recognizing their creativity.
