The DMPS Communications team isn’t often in the spotlight, but its work is everywhere you look in our schools and administrative buildings, on-air, online, on billboards, in the news, in your inbox, and more.

Once each year, the Iowa School Public Relations Association considers the work of school communications professionals, offers feedback, and presents awards to the best of the best. This year, the DMPS communication team broke its own award record with six Blue and Gold Awards, the top honor denoting a perfect score from the judges, along with eight Awards of Excellence.

The awards highlighted excellence in the team’s photography, videography, graphic design, and its podcast.

Congratulations to the entire team: Phil Roeder, Director of Communications and Public Affairs; Amanda Lewis, Communications and Public Relations Specialist; Adam Rohwer, Graphic Arts Specialist and Web Designer; Kyle Knicley, Video Production Specialist; Jon Lemons, Photographer. “Each and every day, we are fortunate to be able to share stories about some of the most interesting events, activities and people to be found in our community,” noted Roeder. “While our communications team is small, it’s a huge honor to serve the thousands of people and dozens of schools at DMPS and to have our efforts recognized by our peers.”

This five-person department is responsible for most of the signs and billboards you see each day, the school and district logos and other graphic designs, the websites and social media feeds, video and photographs, TheWeek@DMPS newsletter and The Become Here Project: A Des Moines Public Schools podcast, marketing, and special events like the State of the Schools, the Mediacom Stadium Grand Opening, and DMPS Foundation happenings. The team also responds to media requests and supports the district’s lobbyists and Community Legislative Action team.
