DMPS high school student journalists have had no shortage of news to cover during the past year, and excelled at telling stories about their fellow classmates, their schools, and the community. As a result, they’ve been recognized for their hard work during a statewide contest.

“Hoover, North, Roosevelt and East did extremely well in the Iowa High School Press Association Spring News Contest,” said East journalism teacher Natalie Niemeyer.

Of note, two DMPS students were named in the IHSPA Emerging Journalist Top 10. These students receive a certificate, a specialty pin, and a $100 scholarship toward attending the 2022 Summer Journalism Workshops for high school students at the University of Iowa.

In Class C, the East High School news team scored the fifth most points statewide.

Congratulations to all of our journalism students, and their dedicated instructors:

“As if I needed more reasons to be proud of this team,” said Literacy Curriculum Coordinator Elizabeth Sheridan. “We celebrate these amazing students and the opportunities their teachers have created for them.”
