At a time when Iowa is working to increase teacher pay, and school districts across the country work to attract teachers, Des Moines Public Schools and the Des Moines Education Association – representing educators at DMPS – have approved a significant new agreement for pay and benefits. The agreement includes a 3.5% salary increase, the largest in recent history.

“As Superintendent, I am committed to retaining our excellent educators in Des Moines to do the important work of teaching and supporting the students of our community,” said Dr. Ian Roberts. “At the same time, I want DMPS to be a destination district for new teachers who are beginning their careers. This agreement shows our commitment, and continued demonstration that we value our teachers and staff, even in challenging budget times, to supporting our teachers and staff.”

“I appreciate all parties involved really digging in to give the educators of DMPS the best outcome possible,” added Anne Cross, president-elect of the Des Moines Education Association and a teacher at Central Academy. “We worked hard for a fair salary increase and to distribute that increase equitably throughout the salary schedule for the educators we serve.”

Highlights of the agreement between DMPS and DMEA include:

  • A salary increase of 3.5%;
  • A five-year agreement (only the salary increase is negotiated on an annual basic);
  • Greater flexibility in taking leave for family illnesses;
  • Revisiting the safety protocols to elevate teacher and staff safety;
  • Compensation for staff when assisting teammates with vacancies;
  • Teacher mentorship opportunities expanded to support teachers new to DMPS.

The agreement was unanimously approved by the Des Moines School Board.

In addition to representing certified teachers, other DMPS certified employees who DMEA is the bargaining agent for include counselors, librarians, nurses, psychologists, and social workers.

Beyond salaries and benefits, DMPS offers teachers a range of options to advance their own education and careers, including partnerships with Drake University and the University of Northern Iowa in graduate degree programs.
