The Roosevelt High School debate team continues the school’s forensic legacy as they pose with this year’s State championship trophy.

The beat goes on. The great debaters at Roosevelt High School have done it again. The Iowa High School Speech Association held the State Debate Tournament on January 8th and 9th at the DMACC campus in Ankeny and Roosevelt again brought home the Sweepstakes Trophy that is awarded to the outstanding team in the tournament.

Roosevelt’s 28-member squad continued the school’s tradition of excellence in forensics by securing a fourth Sweepstakes Trophy in the last six years. Roosevelt also won the crown in 2011, 2012 and 2014. This is getting downright dynastic. In addition to the team hardware the Riders also notched state championships in the categories of Student Congress (Jacob Thompson) and Public Forum (Daniel Drane and Andy Anderson).

“TRHS is once again State Debate Champions!” tweeted Coach Lauren McCool. “Even three days later I’m smiling with pride!”

“Don’t raise your voice, improve your argument,” advised Desmond Tutu. In these times of raised voices a salute is again in order for the school that is consistently producing the best arguers in the state.

Congratulations, Theodore Roosevelt High School! Your namesake would be proud of your growing reputation (and trophy case) for softly spoken big sticks.
