When it comes to his work behind the camera, East High’s Brian Chang is not only good … this year he is officially the best.

The high school senior has been named the 2015 Hawkeye Photographer of the Year by the Iowa High School Press Association.

Brian has been on the Quill yearbook staff for 3 years, and is currently the photo editor.

“Brian came into yearbook three years ago and has really transformed the photography in our book and our newspaper,” said Natalie Niemeyer, a journalism teacher at East and the faculty advisory for the Quill yearbook and Scroll newspaper. “We have been able to use many dominant photos because we have such good ones, not every yearbook can do that. Brian is very creative and the whole school gets to benefit from his talent.  He is very deserving of this award. ”

In March, Brian submitted an online portfolio and went up against many talented students-photojournalists from throughout the state.

In addition to his yearbook photography, Brian helps out with the Scroll student newspaper, takes head shots for the theatre department, and provides affordable senior photos for students at East.
