McCombs Middle School: Golden Eagles Continue to Soar

The Golden Eagles of McCombs Middle School are kicking off the month of February with some community service projects to show students care and are stepping up to give back to our community. McCombs students made more than 80 fleece dog toys to donate to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and valentine cards for WesleyLife Meals on Wheels to deliver to homebound adults.

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa cares for 18,500+ animals a year. According to The Best Friends Animal Society: “The shelter environment can be stressful for dogs, but shelter staff and volunteers can help ease that stress by providing enrichment opportunities and activities. Many of these enrichment activities also help dogs become more adoptable.”  The Golden Eagles hope they will give the dogs the comfort and stimulation they need.

Students also participated in the Love Letters campaign from DoSomething.org.  DoSomething states that loneliness and isolation are health risks comparable to smoking, obesity, and lack of exercise.  Additionally, 1 in 6 seniors do not know where their next meal is coming from. According to WesleyLife, their drivers “hand-deliver meals daily – not only bringing a delicious meal, but also offering a daily safety check along with a friendly smile and warm conversation.”  This month they will also be delivering cards from the students at McCombs.

The Golden Eagles are a student leadership group at McCombs working to support a positive culture at the middle school and help students realize their leadership potential.  Golden Eagles are expected to be role models, showing positive behavior and encouraging positive behavior in others.  Golden Eagles participate in community service events and get to go in incentive trips.
