Photograph by Hubbell 3rd Grader Wins National PTA Award

Hubbell 3rd grader Tatum Long

Hubbell Elementary School third grader Tatum Long earned top honors in the National PTA Reflections art competition, winning the national Outstanding Interpretation Award for a photograph she entered.

National PTA’s Reflections Program each year provides opportunities for students to explore and express themselves through the arts and receive positive recognition for their efforts and achievements. This year’s theme was “The Magic of the Moment.”

Tatum’s winning entry, Skiing in Style, is an image of her not on the snowy slopes but ready to ski in her bedroom (see her winning photograph below). She said that the “Magic of the Moment” for her was when she learned to ski and the spark that happens when you realize “I can do this.” Her entry was selected from among thousands of submissions from students across the nation and at overseas schools serving U.S. military families.

Talented photographers seem to run in the Long family. Tatum’s older sister Kobie, now in fifth grade at Hubbell, won top honors in last year’s contest!

The 2012-2013 Reflections Outstanding Interpretation Awards were presented in six arts categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts.

The student winner in each of the six categories will be recognized during a special ceremony at the 117th Annual National PTA Convention and Exhibition in June in Cincinnati, OH.

The Reflections program is the PTA’s cornerstone arts program. It was developed in 1969 by Colorado’s PTA President Mary Lou Anderson to encourage students to explore their talents and express themselves. Since then, the Reflections Program has inspired millions of students to reflect on a specific theme and create original artwork. Each year, students in Grades Pre-K through 12 are recognized for bringing the theme to life through dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts.
