Stop the presses! East High School just received another journalism award!

On second thought, let the Scarlets keep those presses rolling.

The East High School 2013 yearbook – Today’s Moments, Tomorrow’s Memories – received the prestigious Neubert Award award from the Iowa High School Press Association.

The judge commented that East’s first try at a chronological book was “a huge challenge in itself but you went above and beyond and filled every page with rich content.”

She also added, “Congratulations on completing an amazing yearbook. It is obvious that the entire staff worked very hard to collect all of the details of this book without cutting corners.”

The Neubert Award, named in honor of the late Mick Neubert, an outstanding journalism adviser from Grinnell, is given to the most outstanding entries statewide in the IHSPA’s whole book contest.

This latest feather in the program’s cap comes in addition to the yearbook’s faculty advisor Natalie Niemeyer herself being recently named a 2014 Rising Star by the Journalism Education Association. Niemeyer has taught at East since graduating from the University of Iowa three years ago.

Her counterpart at North High, Ben Graeber, is also an award-winning teacher as of last fall when the IHSPA named him Teacher of the Year so maybe the longstanding football rivalry between the two schools is taking on a new dimension.

One thing’s for sure. Both schools are cranking out good news on a regular basis.
