East High School Annual Alumni Reunion Planned for May 10

The East High School Alumni Association will hold its 135th annual alumni reunion and banquet on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at East High School (815 E. 13th St.). The reunion is expected to draw up to 1,000 alumni from across the country.

This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the original East High building. An X-ray scan has located a 100-year-old time capsule in a cornerstone of the building. The time capsule will be extracted during a
ceremony on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 2:45 PM. Alumni members will then open the time capsule during the reunion festivities.

Following the alumni reunion, the time capsule will be returned into the cornerstone along with a new time capsule. East High School Principal Steve Johns is taking recommendations for what to include in the new time capsule. Ideas can be submitted to Johns at 515-242-7788 or steven.johns@dmschools.org.

May 10 alumni events will include An Afternoon with East High Stars which will highlight talented students in musical, dramatic and speech presentations. The Social Hour will feature student groups, clubs, and teams as well as an art fair of student creations and the East High jazz band will perform at the banquet. A new sound system was purchased with funds provided by East High alumni.

In addition, there will be a Parade of Champions honoring former East High state champions from numerous classes. The East High School Alumni Foundation also will award approximately $120,000 in
scholarships to graduating seniors. The scholarship program began in 1970 with one individual donating two $500 scholarships. The Foundation now has assets of over $2 Million and annually gives scholarships to between 70-80 students.

This year, three alumni will be inducted into the East High School Hall of Fame for exemplifying the school motto, For the Service of Humanity, as leaders in their community who serve as an
inspiration to East High students through their life pursuits.
