National Guard Brings Its “A Game” to East High

The National Guard brought its “Bring You ‘A’ Game” show to East High School to make students aware of the programs offered by the Guard.

Wednesday we reported on the Youth Opportunity Fair at East High School where some 40 organizations competed for the attentions of hundreds of teenagers grappling with what to do this summer, next year, “AND BEYOND!” as Buzz Lightyear liked to put it.

Friday morning at the same school the National Guard arranged for some undivided attention.

According to the Guard’s website, “You can earn benefits to help pay for your education and expenses, and you can complete your education while you serve. The National Guard offers many programs for every type of student, whether you’re still in high school, attending college or working toward a vocational certification.”

To help them share that message the Guard hired a trio of BMX bike acrobats to put on a show called “Bring Your ‘A’ Game,” the ‘A’ standing for Alliance, Attitude, Authentic, Ability, Active, Anti-Bullying and Achieve.

While they were entertained by X-Games caliber bikobats Cory Yarbrough, Brandon Dosch and Allen Adams, students were invited to fill out a contact card requesting information about how the National Guard can help them pay for school after high school. Completion of the cards also entered students in a drawing for a snazzy set of headphones. Before the show was over Adam March’s name was drawn out of a bucketful by East head football coach Greg Schoon. March is a freshman so it will be awhile before the Guard might be a serious option for him. But he figures to be enjoying his new headphones right away.

Besides drawing the lucky needle out of the haystack of names, Coach Schoon volunteered to sit atop a quarter pipe stunt ramp where he snapped selfies with a student cellphone while Adams soared over him like the flying bike from ET.

A quintet of eager student volunteers also laid down on the gym floor where Dosch hopped his bike over them like he was skipping over a crack in the sidewalk.

All of this to a backbeat of thumping music and crowd roars.

The Guard brought its ‘A’ game to East, and later Roosevelt, on Friday and spelled it B-M-X.
