Des Moines Students Score Well with Urban FFA

Des Moines FFA

DMPS FFA students are introduced as among the new regional officers for the organization.

We’re so proud of the Des Moines chapter of the Future Farmers of America!  Several Des Moines Public Schools students returned from the South Central District Convention with amazing news!

Spencer Stoebner (Hoover) and Melissa Garcia (East) were both elected to the 2014-2015 District Officer Team.  Spencer will be serving as Treasurer and Melissa will be Sentinel.  They are the first students from DMPS to hold an office above the chapter level.  In fact, they are the first urban students in the state to represent FFA at the district level.  To top it off, Melissa is the first Latina to be elected to an office above the chapter level in Iowa.

Next year they will be planning and presenting at several leadership conferences, competitive events, and will visit other schools to conduct workshops.

Alicia Rowland (East) and Angelina White (Roosevelt) received a state academic achievement award for maintaining above a 3.5 GPA and for 3 years of participation in FFA — the first from Des Moines to receive this award.

Three events placed first at District and will be advancing to state.  Dakota Lyddon (Hoover) in Ag Sales will advance for his sales pitch on hydroponics units.  Alexis Kurth (Roosevelt) will advance to state for her presentation and website design skills in the Chapter Website CDE.  The Ag Issues Forum Team will also be advancing to state for their mock debate on Breed Specific Legislation.  The team members are Mikel Wright (Hoover), Aliza Haley (Lncoln), Spencer Stoebner (Hoover), Kaitlyn Falcon (East), and Liz Hada (Valley).

Karlee Morgan (Urbandale) won a silver ranking for her job interview event.  The Parliamentary Procedure Team also received a silver ranking.  The team members include Melissa Garcia (East), Max Murphy (Roosevelt), Brandie Joy (Hoover), Cory Hunt (Lincoln), and Bethany Swanson (Hoover).

Des Moines FFA is an urban agricultural education program located in Iowa’s capital. The program encompasses the Des Moines Metro Area and focuses on horticulture, animal science, and leadership.
