Tomorrow It’s ‘Back to School’ for 1,500 Des Moines Students

While most students across the state are still enjoying a summer vacation, more than 1,500 Des Moines students will return to school on Thursday, July 14 at Capitol View and River Woods elementary schools, and Moulton Extended Learning Center.

Des Moines Public Schools’ continuous calendar schools begin the school year in mid-July and end in early June. Breaks are spread throughout the year to optimize teaching and learning. In addition to a six-week summer break, students have a three-week fall break, a two-week winter break, a two-week spring break, and a week-long break in April.

Capitol View Elementary, located at 320 E. 16th St., will serve over 600 students this year.

“Capitol View Elementary School is looking forward to the first day of school and the coming months with eager students to guide and direct along the path of knowledge and discovery,” said Udell Cason, Jr., interim principal at Capitol View. “We will work together to meet the needs of the students and to establish reasons to rejoice about our accomplishments.”

Moulton Extended Learning Center, located at 1541 8th St., is home to 420 students in grades PreK-8 this year.

“We certainly are extremely excited about starting another school year here at Moulton,” commented Craig Saddler, Moulton principal. “We are proud of the progress we made last year and stand poised to build upon our success!”

River Woods Elementary School, located at 2929 SE 22nd St., will serve over 500 students this year.

“We are looking forward to getting started with the new school year,” said Jill Burnett Requist, River Woods principal. “The River Woods family is looking forward to seeing students and their families again and embarking on another exciting year of learning.”

Classes begin at 8:15 a.m. at Capitol View and 8:35 a.m. at Moulton and River Woods.
