Parents: Learn More About Moore

Informational Events Scheduled for Soon-to-Reopen Elementary School

learnmooreDes Moines Public Schools is preparing to re-open Moore Elementary School in time for the 2015-16 school year. But first, parents have an opportunity to “learn more about Moore” at events later this month and in early February.

DMPS is hosting two informational session for parents on January 26 and 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Franklin Avenue Public Library at 5000 Franklin Avenue in Des Moines. (NOTE: The times of this event have been extended from when this announcement was originally made.) The sessions will be an opportunity for parents to learn more about the school, ask questions, and meet school leaders.

In addition, a registration event will be held on February 9 for parents wishing to sign up their children to attend Moore. The event will be from 1:00 to 7:00 PM at the Franklin Avenue Public Library.

Beth Sloan, currently the principal at Hillis Elementary School, will be the principal of Moore Elementary School when it re-opens.

Thanks to increased enrollment across the district, along with population trends in Beaverdale and other parts of northwest Des Moines, the school district is re-opening Moore to provide additional classrooms as well as more educational options for Des Moines families.

Moore closed in 2007 due to declining enrollment. The building then served as a “swing school” to provide a temporary location for schools undergoing renovations and for the past several years has been the location for Scavo High School. Scavo moved to newly renovated space at Central Campus earlier this month.

Beginning this month, the Moore building will undergo a $6.6 million renovation to upgrade classroom, make improvements to everything from technology to security, and construct a new gymnasium.

In addition, when it re-opens the school will begin the process of becoming an International Baccalaureate World School. Moore will be the first IB elementary school in northwest Des Moines, and provide students and families access to the IB curriculum from elementary through middle and high school. Both Meredith Middle School and Hoover High Schools, which Moore students would go on to attend, are IB World Schools.

Moore is located at 3725 52nd Street, along Douglas Avenue. For more information about the school, including how to enroll, visit moore.dmschools.org.
