The IB Diploma Programme is a two year program of study for students in grades 11 and 12. Successful IB Diploma candidates are students who are self-motivated, enjoy intellectual and academic challenges, possess good time management skills, and have taken rigorous preparatory coursework. Successful completion of an IB Diploma can support students in college admission, placement, and credit.

In 2008, Des Moines Public Schools became the first school district in Iowa to offer the world-renowned International Baccalaureate Programme as another educational choice for students. Today, the IB program in Des Moines has grown to include ten schools serving more than 4,500 students.
