Lincoln Teacher Named Educator of the Year
Each year Iowa Safe Schools honors a teacher who has gone above and beyond work in the classroom to improve the lives of their LGBTQ students.
This October, Lincoln High School teacher Stephanie Brennan will be in the spotlight during the 2016 Spirit Awards, celebrating Iowa’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) students, educators, and schools who are improving the lives of LGBTQ youth in Iowa.
The following news release from Safe Schools Iowa names Brennan 2016 Educator of the Year, and touts Brennan’s efforts as a teacher and an exemplary human being. As one student put it, Brennan”has saved lives.”
Brennan herself had this to say: “It feels good to know that all of the hard work, extra time and energy you put into teaching and supporting students is appreciated. This award would have never happened without my absolutely amazing students and staff here at Lincoln who work tirelessly to make our school a safe place for all students. It gives me motivation to keep going and keep working hard to make sure all students have a positive experience at Lincoln and leave everyday knowing that they are important, they are accepted and they are cared for.”

Stephanie is in her ninth year teaching at Des Moines Public Schools and has taught at North High School and East High School. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 2003.
