DMPS On The Go: District Launches WiFi Service on School Buses
Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) is proud to announce the launch of “DMPS On The Go,” a new initiative that provides WiFi service on all 126 school buses in the district. This service is designed to enhance students’ access to the internet, allowing them to make more productive use of their travel time, whether heading to school, returning home, or traveling to out-of-town events. More than 14,000 students ride a school bus during some point on a typical school day at DMPS.
Dr. Ian Roberts, Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, emphasized the critical role of equitable access to technology in education: “Closing the digital divide is essential for our students to thrive academically and personally. ‘DMPS On The Go’ is another step in ensuring every student has the tools and resources they need, no matter where they are.”
Ninety percent of the cost of the project was funded through E-Rate, a program under the Federal Communications Commission which provides discounts for telecommunications, internet access, and internal connections to eligible schools and libraries. Additionally, the WiFi service complies with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), ensuring a safer and more secure online environment for students.
Neil Schroeder, Chief Information Officer, highlighted the transformative impact of technology: “Technology is at the heart of modern education. By providing WiFi access on our buses, we’re enabling students to stay connected, complete assignments, and enhance their learning experience even while on the move.”
Samantha Sonnichsen, Director of Transportation, spoke to the logistical benefits for the district’s students: “Each day, thousands of students rely on our buses to get to and from school and activities. ‘DMPS On The Go’ ensures that this travel time can also be learning time, adding real value to their educational journey.”
With “DMPS On The Go,” DMPS continues its commitment to innovation and equity, ensuring students have access to the tools they need to succeed in and out of the classroom.
