DMPS Hires Equity and Inclusion Program Manager

Jacob Cummings is the new Equity and Inclusion Program Manager.

DES MOINES, IA (November 7, 2019) – The district welcomes Jake Cummings as the new Equity and Inclusion Program Manager. This is an evolving position which formerly focused solely on equity.

Cummings graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Business Communications and went on to earn his law degree from Drake University. Most recently, he began working on a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Iowa State University. Cummings is a former trial attorney with experience in civil litigation and administrative law. For five years, he was the sole practitioner and owner of Cummings Law Firm, PLLC. In May of 2015, Cummings became a senior specialist in the Iowa State University Office for Diversity and Inclusion, where he was an advisor on matters of diversity, equity and inclusion.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to equity in education, DMPS has created a position dedicated to the development and execution of programs, initiatives, and training that promote and support diversity in the school district,” said Susan Tallman, Chief of Human Resources. “Jacob Cummings has already proven he can hit the ground running and contribute a wealth of ideas as we strive toward our goal of becoming the model for urban education in the United States.”

In addition to developing and executing diversity programs, trainings and initiatives, Cummings will monitor and ensure legal compliance with regard to equal access to educational employment and promotional opportunities.

“My position here at Des Moines Public Schools is a wonderful opportunity to carry forward the work of helping people feel respected, valued and appreciated in their workplaces,” said Cummings. “I will ensure processes in place are equitable to all, by helping to establish and maintain an environment that is inclusive, by helping to attract quality employees of varying backgrounds, and by finding ways to support and enhance the experience of existing employees.”

Jacob Cummings started work at DMPS on Monday, October 28.
