As we transition to a hybrid learning model, we will also be transitioning to serving student meals differently. Please find your learning model below for instructions about how to access free school meals as hybrid learning begins. All children attending Des Moines Public Schools are eligible to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at no charge, regardless of income, for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. All children will have access to free meals while attending in-person school.

These changes begin on Oct. 19 at elementary schools and Oct. 26 at middle schools.

HYBRID STUDENTS

Hybrid students will automatically receive meals at the end of most days at school. You do not need to do anything to start this process. Guidelines for food safety and reheating instructions will be included with the meals and can also be found on the Des Moines Public Schools webpage. If your child is not at school and misses a meal distribution, you are always welcome at our high school locations for a meals pickup between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays.

Monday/Tuesday Cohort:

  • Students will receive two days of meals on Monday at the end of the day, for suggested consumption on Thursday and Friday.
  • Students will receive two days of meals on Tuesday at the end of the day, for suggested consumption on Saturday and Sunday.
  • When students are not in school on Wednesdays, they can receive meals at any of our high school locations until Nov. 9.
  • As we near Nov. 9, watch for more information about how to pick up Wednesday meals beginning Nov. 10.

Thursday/Friday Cohort:

  • Students will receive two days of meals on Thursday at the end of the day, for suggested consumption on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Students will receive two days of meals on Friday at the end of the day, for suggested consumption on Monday and Tuesday.
  • When students are not in school on Wednesdays, they can receive meals at any of our high school locations until Nov. 9.
  • As we near Nov. 9, watch for more information about how to pick up Wednesday meals.

If you would like to opt out of receiving these healthy, no cost meals, please call our Central Nutrition Center at 515-242-7636.  If you decide not to receive this benefit and change your mind later, please call us back.  We would love to add your child back on the list.

VIRTUAL STUDENTS

We are excited to continue to offer healthy breakfasts and lunches to students who have chosen to receive their education on an all virtual platform this year.

If your family has chosen to remain virtual, please visit one of the high school meal sites until November 9, 2020. The high school sites are open daily from 11am until 1pm for drive thru meal service.  During the Friday meal service, we will continue to provide meals for the weekend.  Addresses for all high school sites operating until November 9th are listed below.

  • East High School:  815 E 13th St.
  • Hoover High School:  4800 Aurora Ave.
  • Lincoln High School:  2600 SW 9th St.
