About Brother 2 Brother

Brother 2 Brother was created in 2009 and initially began with chapters at Hoover, Lincoln, North, and Roosevelt High Schools as well as in Callanan Middle School and Moulton Elementary School. The program has expanded to McCombs, Harding, Hiatt, and Merrill Middle Schools and continues to grow in the district.

Brother 2 Brother consists of a matrix of responsibilities and activities surrounding academic achievement, personal development, professional growth, and service learning. Some of these activities include participating in college field trips, study tables, conferences, workshops, and visiting mentors who are men of color. Brother 2 Brother is a pipeline to high school and college with chapters at Drake University and Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC).

Mission Statement:

We inspire minds by creating an academic community that challenges students to engage in their futures.

Vision Statement:

The Brother 2 Brother program will be a model for mentoring programs involving males of color in the United States.

Core Values:

  • Respect: We will strive to feel and/or show honor to our families, students, teachers, and community members
  • Perseverance: We will continue to work as hard as we can with our mission, goals, and tasks until they are mastered
  • Build: We will embrace “the process” of doing the things we need to do in order to accomplish our mission, vision, and core values. This will include developing good habits, overcoming adversity, and surrounding ourselves with the right individuals for support
  • Lead: We will lead with integrity, courage, and through action. Our goal is to break down barriers and think “outside the box”
