Application/Selection Process

Given the Board’s governing policy and the provisions of State Code, the Des Moines School Board has established a process for selecting and appointing an individual to fill the unexpired term of office. It is important to note that all portions of the appointment process are public.

Effective June 10, 2020, the Board will begin accepting Letters of Interest and Resumes from interested individuals who live within the District 1 boundaries. More detailed information regarding Letters of Interest and accompanying credentials can be found here. Completed materials can be sent either in hard copy form or submitted electronically. Deadline for submission of materials is Noon on Wednesday, June 24, 2020.

The Board will provide “How the Board Works: a Workshop on Improving Student Achievement Through Effective Board Governance” on Saturday, June 20, 2020 online via Microsoft Teams. (To register for the workshop, please contact Erin Jenkins at erin.jenkins@dmschools.org.) Participation in this event will be a consideration in the Board’s deliberation. The workshop is free and open to anyone interested. Details and registration information will be posted at www.dmschools.org.

The Board will complete the initial screening of all applicants and will determine at least 5 finalists for public interviews.

Public interviews will be scheduled for June 29, and June 30 as needed, with the final selection announced by Friday, July 3. The board will interview 25% of the applicants, or no fewer than 5, or all applicants if the total number is fewer than 5.

The individual selected to fill the board vacancy will be sworn in at the Regular School Board Meeting on August 11, 2020 at 6:00 PM in the Central Campus Multi-Purpose Room and shall begin service immediately. Prior to the meeting there will be an opportunity for the appointee to meet the Chief Officers from the District and learn about each of their departments.
