Scheels Becomes an Activity Sponsor of Des Moines Public Schools

Scheels recognizes the importance of activities and athletics to Des Moines Public School students. Starting with Mediacom Stadium, we have begun a district-wide initiative to improve our high school athletic facilities. Studies show that students who participate in extracurricular activities display higher levels of academic achievement and school engagement, compared to those who do not. These students are more likely to achieve professional success and college admission further down the line. Athletic, arts, and music programs teach students personal development skills such as teamwork, leadership, perseverance, lifelong healthy habits of nutrition and physical activity, accountability, and many other characteristics.

Des Moines Public Schools offers over 300 programs to students including 23 different athletic programs, performing and fine arts programs, orchestra, choir, clubs, etc. All programs are solely funded by Des Moines Public while budgets continue to get cut. Without the necessary equipment to run activities and programs, DMPS cannot meet students’ basic needs when it comes to physical or mental health. As the Activities Fund Sponsor, Scheels will provide equitable access to activities and sports equipment for thousands of students. Scheels will make a lasting impact on the lives of Des Moines Public Schools students with this donation!
