The Merrill Middle School 1600m relay team qualified for the first running of the event at the Drake Relays.

It hasn’t been easy for many track and field athletes. Mother Nature’s been interfering more than usual with spring meet schedules. But that didn’t keep East, Hoover, Lincoln, North and Roosevelt student-athletes from qualifying in a fourteen different events at the 109th annual Drake Relays.

In addition, a quartet of runners from Merrill Middle School qualified for the 1600m medley relay at the Relays, a brand new middle school event this year. Only sixteen middle schools teams – eight boys and eight girls – from across Iowa were selected for the event. Congratulations to team members Ke’Ayla Madison (7th grade), Arianna Jackson (7th), Sarah Fleming (8th), Ziaire Ewing (8th) and their coach, Martin Luft.
