A Birthday Party for Dr. Seuss at Greenwood

For Read Across America day, students at Greenwood Elementary School celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

At Greenwood Elementary School this morning, a couple of Things were on the loose.

They had something to do with a doctor named Seuss.

Today is Read Across America Day, as designated by the National Education Association, AND the birthday of Ted Geisel, much, much better known as Dr. Seuss, and nowhere is that a more special occasion than in the nation’s schools.

To mark it at Greenwood, lots of silly yet serious stuff is planned. Guest readers are visiting classrooms throughout the day, students and staff are attired accordingly, there are One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish estimation jars sprinkled around the building and Dr. Seuss Trivia is also on the agenda.

But first, to set the mood and show them the way,

another Dr. started the day.

Ahart’s his name and he is the Super.

He read them his fave, top choice, a real duper.

Superintendent Ahart read I Had Trouble Getting to Solla Sollew aloud to an all-school assembly, not necessarily one of Dr. Seuss’s biggest hits, but certainly a selection that everyone, kids and grownups alike, knows well – whether they know it or not!

Dr. Ahart won’t be able to make it to every building today, but similar activities are happening all over the district.

And, the Des Moines Education Association is throwing a sort of birthday party today from 5:00-7:00 PM at Merle Hay Mall. There will be a musical presentation by Hoover High School, read-aloud stories, a Dr. Seuss character costume contest, games and prizes and free cookies and books (as long as supplies last). The event is co-sponsored by Everybody WINS! IOWA, the Merle Hay Mall, and the Iowa State Education Association.

At the end of the day you’ll wish it weren’t through.

Life is good on the banks of the River Wah-Hoo…
