DMPS Takes Part in the 2014 Gallup Student Poll

galluppollFor the second year in a row, Des Moines Public Schools is excited to take part in the Gallup Student Poll. Gallup is one of the preeminent public opinion organizations in the world, and DMPS is pleased to continue this partnership.

DMPS is joining thousands of other schools and districts across the nation in measuring the hope, engagement, and well-being of students. By participating in this survey, students can safely share what they think about their life in school, at home, and in the community.

Last year, 75% of DMPS students in grades 5-12 participated in the first Gallup Student Poll at DMPS. The school district hopes for even higher participation in 2014. All students are encouraged to participate so their voices are heard as DMPS works to help every student succeed.

The main focus of the survey is on the attitude of students, how hopeful they feel, how engaged they are with school, and their sense of well-being. Based on our work with Gallup, these are some key factors that influence student grades, achievement and graduation as well as future steps towards higher education and employment. The results provide important information that is used as a part of the district’s school improvement work.

A Web-Based Survey
The Gallup Student Poll is a 10-minute web-based survey for students in grades 5 through 12. Gallup is a polling company that will collect and safely store the data collected, and will not reveal personal responses. The Gallup Student Poll contains 20 core questions and 6 demographic questions. After the survey period is over, each DMPS principal will receive an electronic scorecard with the school’s results.

Survey Dates
DMPS will administer the poll to students in grades 5 through 12 from Tuesday, September 30 to Friday, October 31.
