Students from the Iowa Energy & Sustainability Academy did an extreme field trip to Dominican Republic during Spring Break.

The students in award-winning teacher Larry Beall’s award-winning Iowa Energy and Sustainability Academy at Central Campus took the opportunity of spring break to go on an extreme field trip to the Dominican Republic where they worked on a variety of environmental service projects.

One of their favorites was a terracing project to grow crops in steep mountain environments, something they’d discussed in class and have now experienced firsthand. Beall also collected hundreds of photos that he plans to use next year in his instruction to first year students in the two-year IESA program.

Another project converted discarded oil drums into recycling /garbage bins to be used in parks and at the school the students visited, complete with the hand-painted IESA brand. Word of this cutting edge curriculum is really starting to spread!

Earlier this year Beall was honored with the “Trailblazing Teacher” award from the U.S. Green Building Council for his pioneering work in developing the Iowa Energy and Sustainability Academy.
