Des Moines Public Schools is pleased to announce that Tim Schott will serve as the district’s Executive Director of Secondary Schools. Schott is currently the principal of Hubbell Elementary School.

“Tim has been a leader and an innovator in Des Moines for several years, especially in our efforts at being the first district in Iowa with the International Baccalaureate program,” said Dr. Nancy Sebring, Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools. “Tim will be a great addition to our leadership team. His experience and knowledge is going to benefit all of Des Moines.”

As Executive Director of Secondary Schools, Schott will lead the district’s middle school programs, providing leadership and support to principals and their teams. He will also contribute to the ongoing development of the district’s International Baccalaureate program.

“We are on the cusp of great changes in our school district and I am honored to be able to contribute my energy to our mission of ‘ensuring that our graduates possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities for success at the next stage of their lives,’ said Schott. “I am looking forward to working with our middle school students, teachers and schools along their path to success.”

Since 2004, Schott has been principal of Hubbell Elementary School. In that position, he led the effort to become Iowa’s first International Baccalaureate PYP World School. Enrollment at Hubbell increased 38% during his tenure, and the school was twice awarded School of Excellence Designation by the National PTA.

In addition, Schott served as principal of Cattell Elementary School from 2002-2004 and of St. Theresa Catholic K-8 School from 1999-2002. He began his education career as a teacher at McKinley Elementary School in 1992.

Schott received a BS in economics from Loras College. He also holds a MS in Teaching and a MS in School Administration as well as an Ed.S, all from Drake University.

A long-time Des Moines educator, Jack Cavanagh, will serve as interim principal at Hubbell through the end of the 2011-12 school year. Most recently, he was principal at Edmunds Elementary School. Cavanagh also lives in the Hubbell neighborhood, a school which his children attended.
