Registration for 2013-2014 Head Start Program Begins Next Week; Universal Preschool Registration Begins March 11

Registration for Des Moines Public Schools’ Head Start program for the 2013-2014 school year will begin February 21, 2013.

Head Start registration will take place at the Welcome Center, 1301 2nd Avenue. Applicants are required to bring proof of birth (child’s birth certificate or T-19 card) and proof of income (taxes from 2012 or current FIP or current SSI).

Head Start is a federally funded comprehensive child development program that serves income eligible children ages 3 to 5 and their families. The Des Moines Head Start program is a delegate of the Drake University Head Start program serving over 400 children in several elementary schools throughout Des Moines.

“Head Start’s overall goal is to increase school readiness for young children from low income families who meet federal income guidelines,” said Susie Guest, Early Childhood Programs Administrator for Des Moines Public Schools. “A range of support services are also provided including development and health screenings as well as nutrition and social services. Parent involvement is welcomed and highly encouraged.”

Head Start classes are held four days per week with no school on Wednesday. Families may call 515-242-7588 or 515-242-7949 for more information or to schedule an appointment to register their child.

Beginning on March 11, 2013, families may register their 4-year-olds for Des Moines Public Schools’ universal preschool program. Children must be four on or before September 15, 2013 to be eligible. The 2013-2014 application will be available at www.dmschools.org on Friday, March 8.
