For the past decade, Des Moines Public Schools – thanks to the support of the community – has overseen more than $450 million in improvements to the district’s schools, from the renovation of historic structures to the construction of brand new facilities. This effort has made our schools better prepared for the 21st century with enhanced technology, improved efficiency, and more comfortable and safer learning environments.
These efforts have been made possible under two initiatives: Schools First, a local option sales approved by the voters of Polk County, and then Students First, funded by the continuation of the sales tax by the Iowa General Assembly.
In addition, over the past decade DMPS has made an additional $50 million in maintenance expenditures to our 72 facilities through the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL).
