More than 6,600 students attend middle school in Des Moines at both traditional schools as well as special programs.

Eleven comprehensive middle schools – Brody, Brubaker, Callanan, Harding, Goodrell, Hiatt, Hoyt, McCombs, Meredith, Merrill and Weeks – are located throughout the city. In addition, two of these schools (Goodrell and Merrill) are accredited International Baccalaureate schools and two more (Brody and Meredith) are in the process of becoming IB accredited.

In addition, Cowles Montessori School is Iowa’s only public Montessori school and offers an education through 8th grade. Finally, the school district provides alternative middle school education programs, and in 2014 will be opening a new school for this program.
