NOTE: DMPS is making several changes and updates to our website to highlight our current programs, departments, and offices. Our Teaching and Learning department oversees most areas impacting student academics. When the web site update is complete those items will be housed in this section of the website. In the meantime, if you cannot find information online, please be sure to use the search tool at the top of this page.

Des Moines Public Schools provides students with more options to meet their educational needs and interests than any place in Iowa. The Teaching and Learning department oversees and elevates the academic growth of more than 32,000 students in Des Moines from preschool through graduation from high school. The department includes Early Childhood, K-12 Curriculum, English Language Learning, Advanced Learning, Technical Education, and Virtual Learning, providing leadership guidance to principals and curriculum direction and support to staff at each of our 60 schools.

The curriculum team consists of coordinators for the following content areas: Literacy/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education/Health, Career Technology Education, Advanced Learning, Fine and Performing Arts, Visual Arts, World Languages, and International Baccalaureate. In collaboration with teams of teachers, coordinators develop vertically aligned curriculum that is based on state and national standards.
