The following are key dates in the process to fill the District 2 vacancy on the Des Moines School Board:

February 3
Touissant Cheatom’s resignation; School Board discusses and reaches consensus on appointment process

February 6 – 16
Letters of Interest and Resumes may be submitted by individuals interested in filling the vacancy

February 14
“How the School Board Works” workshop from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at North High School (click here to register)

February 16
Noon deadline to submit Letters of Interest and Resumes

February 17
Regular School Board Meeting – 
Distribution of Applications Scoring Rubrics (Tentative)

February 18
School Board meets at 5:30 p.m. at 901 Walnut Street to review and score applicants, and to discuss and determine top 3 candidates to interview

February 19
All applicants will be contacted regarding status by this date with at least 3 
finalists invited to interview with the School Board

February 23
Public interviews of candidate finalists beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the 
Multi-Purpose Room at Central Campus

February 26
School Board meets at 5:30 p.m. at 901 Walnut Street to discuss and determine appointment

February 27
Interviewed finalists notified by this date

March 3
Appointed District 2 member sworn in at a Special School Board meeting

March 3 – September 15
Period of service for newly appointed District 2 School Board member

September 8
School Board Elections. The remaining 2 years of the District 2 seat will 
be on the regular ballot in this election.

September 15
Elected District 2 School Board member sworn in at regular meeting for 
remaining two years of vacated term
