Roosevelt High School presents “Playing Shakespeare” on April 10 and 11.

The Roosevelt High School Theatre Arts Department presents “Playing Shakespeare,” bringing together three One Act plays based upon the works of the Bard of Avon into one fun-filled evening.

Performances are on Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11 at 7:30 PM at Roosevelt’s Auditorium. Ticket prices are $5.

The three one-act plays that comprise “Playing Shakespeare” are:

  • All The World’s A Stage – The play by Mary W. Schaller is a feisty collection of some of Shakespeare’s greatest scenes.  Narrated by a Modern Theater Student, several recognizable characters are brought to life from such works as Henry V, As You Like It, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, and The Tempest. You don’t have to be a Shakespeare enthusiast to appreciate the acting troupe’s comical re-enactment of this show’s collection of tragedy, comedy, and history.
  • The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet – the title says it all!  This is a whimsical reinvention of Shakespeare’s tragic love story, by Peter Bloedel, complete with rhymed couplets, creative wordplay, and fantastical machines – similar to something Dr. Seuss might have come up with if her ever had his way with the script.
  • The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) – by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield, this play explores three actors’ attempt to perform all of Shakespeare’s works in a single performance. Through many trials and tribulations, they succeed in the most comedic of ways. From performing the histories as a game of football to presenting Hamlet in fast forward and reverse, the show generates nonstop laughter from start to finish.

A quick FAQ about the play:

Why did you select it?
We wanted to create an evening of one act plays that could offer several opportunities for performance.  We selected the “Shakespeare” theme because we found this grouping of one acts that we felt went together very well.

How does it help the students grow?
This has given several students the opportunity to look at the basic themes and story lines of these Shakespeare plays.  They have been given the chance to create fun and energized characters.

What cool things are the tech/crew doing?
We are building a replica of a section of the Globe Theatre.  It is fun to use the one staging idea for all three of the shows.

How has the cast been doing?
We have been just touching the surface of the shows to date.  Now that break is over, we are going full force into each of the shows.  There is a lot of work and a lot of laughter.
